When There Is No Playbook

Leading in times of uncertainty, especially when tensions are high, requires a set of courageous leadership skills. Oftentimes, you discover that taking action to lower the temperature or de-escalating means balancing many high-stakes factors.

You know that:

  • Your presence and actions matter as much as words.
  • You need to find and seize the right moment amid uncertainty.
  • You need to speak authentically.
  • You need to stay composed when others are losing control.
  • You need to lead with empathy when emotions run high.
  • You need to demonstrate courage, inspiring others to follow your lead.

There’s no playbook for this kind of leadership, so how should you navigate it all? Intentional practices can help establish your goals, find the right action and protect yourself and your community. This is where your “Moment of Courage” comes in

A ritual for your “Moment of Courage” is a creative and culturally significant practice that leaders can use to ground themselves, focus their intentions, and regulate emotions during moments of conflict or high pressure. Rituals help leaders return to the present, connect with their values, and be their best selves in times of transition or crisis. They can be personal or communal, and they are often inherited from cultural or spiritual traditions, though new ones can be created to suit current needs. Rituals help leaders act as “thermostats” — cooling the temperature of conflicts and promoting healthier, more productive environments for dialogue and action.

Your Next Move Matters

Based on insights from experts in sports psychology, leadership, faith, and the science of social norms, we’ve developed different types of rituals you can tailor for your key moments of leadership. Below is a framework to provide quick, actionable tips to help you navigate high-pressure situations.

Before the Moment

  • Remember, this mattersA simple reminder that your work matters and that your decision was rooted in your values and mission can help you remember the bigger picture when conflict arises.
  • Tap into your community. One of the most important elements of lowering temperatures is setting and reinforcing collective social norms. People respond well to seeing people they identify with and respect demonstrating a positive social norm. Use this moment to tap into your community, especially people who you could build stronger relationships with both to support you and extend impact. You aren’t alone in your desire to make a difference; identify five people who you trust and who have influence in nearby communities and ask for their perspective. If you’re a faith leader, consider a small business leader or an advocate. Think about what you can share with them and vice versa. By reaching out in advance and not immediately asking for something, you can deepen your connection with important leaders who can step up to each other in times of crisis.
  • Set your intention. Success for de-escalation work often looks different. You don’t have total control of the situation, so setting an appropriate intention matters. Whatever works for you to have clarity. For example, “we agree to disagree, but in a respectful way”.. Don’t hide from the issue but don’t focus on the bad outcome. Remember, the best-case scenario is always possible; it may just take some work.

During the Moment

  • Visualization. Picture someone whose courage you admire, this gives you something to aspire to. Famous or not, real or imaginary, as long as they model grace under pressure.  It could be someone famous like Muhammed Ali, Neil Armstong, MLK or Malala Yousafzai, or you can visualize someone who would be proud of you for taking action.
  • Align mind and body. Drawing from mindfulness practices and sports psychology, there are powerful methods you can use to keep control of your body. Relaxation and grounding techniques can help manage the jitters and bring you back to the situation at hand.
  • Music. Sometimes you may need to do more. We know that music activates different parts of the brain and can help transform your mood. Leverage this by listening to your favorite hype anthem, or a song that calms you before entering a tense room.
